Hello jellos!Well this has been one announcement after the other hasn’t it? Well the reason for that is because one gigantic post about everything would just be REALLY boring especially about such different matters, other thing is, I like having everything well divided and organized (just on the internet my room is a real mess...
Today I’m here to reformulate my “Expression of the Week” segment! The truth is I don’t always have access to my computer so I can’t always come here and change the quote, also I sometimes forget, I admit! So, in a much more efficient way I started posting quotes on my Twitter account! (yes... just now... not like I did that since I created it years ago...)
What’s even greater than that is that I post a different quote almost every day (sometimes multiple on the same day) and I notify when a new post comes out, so you’ll be always up to date on that!
You can follow me here, or just browse it a little, and discover my late night cries about TV shows and anime!

Olá fofos!Bem ultimamente tem sido anúncios uns atrás dos outros não é? Bem a razão para isso é porque um post gigante sobre todas estas coisas seria aborrecido, e honestamente gosto de ter tudo muito bem organizadinho (menos na vida real o meu quarto está uma confusão…
Hoje estou aqui para reformular o segmento “Expressão da Semana”! A verdade é que nem sempre tenho acesso ao computador e então nem sempre consigo mudar a expressão… E claro muitas vezes me esqueço também! Por isso de modo a ser muito mais eficiente comecei a postar estas expressões no Twitter! (sim… comecei agora… não ando a fazer isso desde que o criei nem nada…)
O que é ainda mais fantástico é que desta forma consigo postar uma expressão diferente quase todos os dias! (às vezes até várias por dia) e notificar-vos sempre que um post aqui do site sair!
Podem seguir-me aqui, ou apenas ver um pouco, ver se gostam dos tweets que posto nas minhas noites intermináveis de choro sobre séries e animes.

Weekly Update | I'm Back In Business

Hello guys!I’m very pleased to inform that after such a long time trying to figure stuff out I’m back on my daily studying routine!
As I mentioned in one of my previous posts I’m going to report what I do during the previous week, instead of setting big goals that bring me down each time I don’t/can’t attain them!
So this week was fairly ‘calm’ actually, I’ve been reviewing all my Italian on Duolingo, this time around paying more attention to the sentence structures and taking note of the vocabulary I don’t quite grasp, instead of just trying to complete the bigger amount of levels in the least amount of time. I still have a ton to review, but while I’m doing it I am also trying to engage more with natives and reading some texts for kids, and I’m pleased to say that even while not knowing all the vocabulary, through sentence structure and similarities to Portuguese and Spanish I could read a decent amount!
Moving on to Japanese, I’m taking things even slower than with Italian, taking the time to properly learn the Katakana and training reading Hiragana as much as possible, not worrying about the vocabulary, just trying to know what the character mean in the first place! I also started properly seeing anime again (some reviews about that coming soon) and I notice I can put the episodes on and look away for a second and understand like 60% of the dialogue (depends on the theme as well, an anime like Fairy Tail that I’ve been following since the beginning is fairly easier than one about sports or music that uses terms I don’t know) I’ve been trying to challenge myself more and more, singing and listening to everything I can and hopefully I’ll improve and get back on track soon!

Olá pessoal!Estou muito feliz em informar que depois de tanto tempo estou de volta ao meu estudo (semi) diário!
Como mencionei num dos meus posts anteriores, em vez de definir objetivos para a semana como fazia anteriormente vou apenas “reportar” o que estudei essa semana, porque honestamente a forma anterior estava a deixar-me em completo stress e a desmotivar-me ainda mais!
Bem, esta semana foi relativamente calma na verdade. Tenho estado a rever o meu Italiano no Duolingo, desta vez a prestar mais atenção às estruturas das frases e a tomar notas do vocabulário que não consigo bem perceber, em vez de apenas tentar completar um determinado número de níveis numa semana. Ainda tenho imensa coisa para rever, mas enquanto o estou a fazer estou também a tentar falar mais com pessoas nativas ou que falem italiano, conseguindo ter pequenas conversações básicas, afinal de contas aprender na prática é sempre o melhor!
Passando ao Japonês, estou a rever ainda mais lentamente as coisas, levando o meu tempo a aprender propriamente Katakana e a treinar a ler o Hiragana tanto quanto possível (como em legendas de vídeos e afins), não me preocupando tanto a nível de gramática e vocabulário até ter estas duas bases na ponta da língua. Também comecei a ver anime novamente (algumas reviews sobre isso em breve) e noto que mesmo sem ver as legendas consigo perceber mais de metade do que dizem (claro que depende, em animes como Fairy Tail que acompanho desde o inicio já estou habituada aos termos que usam sobre magia e afins, enquanto animes sobre temas que não vejo tanto coo música já me passam mais ao lado) tenho tentando desafiar-me cada vez mais, cantando e ouvindo a tudo o que posso e felizmente voltarei ao plano de antes!
Bem isto é tudo por agora (e já é muito), espero trazer-vos mais notícias interessantes para a semana!

Posting Schedules and Why I Hate Them

Hello jellos!Long time no see indeed... Again!
So if you’ve read the title you know I’m here to give one more excuse as to why I haven’t been posting regularly (
Well thing is, I hate schedules! Yeah they’re a lot of fun during the first week, but sooner than later I start to see them as more of an obligation than something I want to do, and the result of that is sloppy content that I rushed to make, instead of all the fun stuff I actually want to do!
I’m not completely abolishing schedules, this is not an anarchy, but I’m going to take the time I need to make GOOD things you WANT to read and watch instead of just throwing stuff in here, I hope you all can be patient and stick with me through this, and I hope you like the content I post, all I want is to bring you all the cool stuff I learn, see, read that you might find you actually enjoy!
Well I’ve been rambling for a while now; this was just a quick note, see you all later!

Olá queridos!Sei que não ando a postar nada… outra vez… E como devem ter lido no título estou aqui para vos dar mais uma desculpa!
Bem a verdade é que eu odeio horários! Sim eles são muitos giros de fazer, e no inicio conseguimos segui-los facilmente, mas depois começam a tornar-se mais como uma obrigação do que outra coisa, e em vez do conteúdo giro e informativo que quero fazer acabo por apressar um texto qualquer sobre algo desinteressante…
É assim, não estou a abolir horários por COMPLETO, apenas vou demorar o meu tempo para fazer BOM conteúdo que vocês QUEIRAM ler e ver! Gostaria que fossem pacientes comigo (se ainda houver alguém por aí) e prometo que no futuro vos trarei coisas muito mais divertidas!

Hello jellies!Today I’m here to talk to you about Valentine’s Day!
Wait… Valentine’s Day was one month ago? Then why is that Japanese guys are giving chocolates and presents to girls today? That’s right, it’s because today, March 14th is White Day!
On this day boys that received Valentine’s Day chocolate from girls reciprocate by giving them chocolate’s and other gifts! If you ask me this is a really sweet custom and people all over the world should embrace it as well!
Yes people may argue that Valentine’s Day is just an institution created by the chocolate industry to make more money, but the intention really matters, and although you shouldn’t neglect your loved ones the rest of the year, having a day where you show you love for them and a day where that love is given back, I think it’s a very cute concept!

Olá fofos!Hoje estou aqui para falar do dia de São Valentim!
Espera... O dia de São Valentim foi há um mês? Então porque é que rapazes japoneses estão a dar chocolates e presentes às raparigas hoje? Porque hoje, dia 14 de Março, é chamado de White Day, ou traduzido à letra, Dia Branco.
Neste dia os rapazes que receberam chocolate no dia de São Valentim retribuem o gesto, oferecendo-lhes chocolates ou outros presentes! Se me perguntarem acho que é um costume muito fofo e todo o mundo devia adotá-lo também!
Sim, pessoas podem dizer que o dia de São Valentim foi crido por corporações como a indústria do chocolate apenas para ganhar dinheiro, mas a intenção importa, e apesar de não devermos negligenciar aqueles que amamos o resto do ano, ter um dia em que podemos mostrar o nosso amor por eles e outro em que recebemos esse mesmo amor é um conceito adorável!

Burning Your Feelings Away
Once upon a time, somewhere in-between childhood and adolescence, I felt like my life was too overwhelming, like everybody hates me, I felt alone... But something else was burning inside of me, something that honestly I rarely feel, anger.
I was angry with me, my family, my so-called friends, people I once knew but that became mere strangers, all of them were to blame!
For days that anger was consuming me, to let out my frustration I wrote "hate, hATE, HATE, H A T E" horrible, hateful things went through my mind, but I dodn't want to be like that, I didn't want to be that person, so I grabbed those feelings, all that hate, and I burned it... I simply burned it!
i know it seems so idiotic how burning a piece of written paper can influence something, but when I saw that flame consume the blue, black and red ink I also burned the hate in my mind, and for a small moment I felt so calm, so peaceful, it was marvellous.
Since then I've taken as a habit to burn my feeling away, sadness, anger, frustration... even love... I burn it all away in my mind, if I do that I can protect myself, I can continue to feel that brief peace in my mind, people say I have to take leaps of faith, that I have to trust... To hell with that! Never let anyone tell you that you have to feel, you can't hide away, yes, it's unhealthy, yes, I may miss chances at something great, but that is because I KNOW I'm not ready, and if you're not either don't let anybody tell you otherwise!

Mardi Gras

Hello strawberry shortcakes!
Today I’m here to bring to you a little bit more of culture from around the world! This will be a short post though, I’m on test season, the most dreaded for a student, but I didn’t want to leave you without a weekly goodie!
Today I’m here to talk about Mardi Gras, also called Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday, this day marks the beginning of the Carnival celebrations (in some countries), beginning after the Epiphany and ending on before Ash Wednesday.
Typically on Mardi Gras people wear costumes or masks, go to various local parties, or even take vacations, dance, play, throw parades, and many other things. This day came to be because it marks the period before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season (that lasts until Easter’s Sunday) when people pray, atone, and repent on their sins. I see it as a last night of fun and party before people face their decisions and consequences of their actions (of course this is a religious concept, mostly Christian, people from other religions, or with no religion at all may see in this day just a reason to celebrate life and friends).
Of course this day and it’s definition varies a lot from country to country and from culture to culture, some people celebrate on different days, or in different days, some (like myself) didn’t even know this day existed, or rather, that it had a proper name and background, and that it was so widespread.

Olá docinhos de morango!
Hoje venho trazer-vos mais um pouco de cultura do resto do mundo! Este porém vai ser um post curto, estou em época de testes, a época mais temida pelos alunos, mas não queria deixar-vos sem um pequeno presente!
Hoje estou aqui para falar do Mardi Gras, também chamado de “Terça-feira dos Gordos”, este dia marca o início do Carnaval (em alguns países), começando depois do Dia dos Reis e terminando no dia seguinte.
Tipicamente no Mardi Gras as pessoas usam máscaras e fatos, vão a várias festas locais, ou até de férias para fora, dançam, jogam, organizam desfiles e muitas outras coisas. Este dia foi criado porque marca o início da Quaresma (que dura até ao Domingo de Páscoa) onde pessoas rezam e absolvem-se dos seus pecados. Eu vejo-o como os últimos momentos de diversão e festa antes de se enfrentar as consequências dos seus atos (claro que isto de um ponto de vista religioso, principalmente cristão, pessoas com religiões que não celebrem estes eventos, ou pessoas sem religião podem aproveitar para ter uma razão para festejar a vida com os amigos e família).
Claro que este dia e a sua definição variam muito de país para país, nem todos têm os mesmos costumes, alguns festejam em dias diferentes, ou de diferentes maneiras, outros (como eu) nem sabiam que este dia existia, pelo menos não por este nome.

Hello guys!Today I bring to you the second app review of this little review series I’m doing! Don’t worry I’ll still post stuff other than reviews, but I want to give you more information about the resources to really learn and this app specifically made me understand something important.
Before I get to that I must specify I used this app for both Italian and Japanese. Even in Italian the app was pretty confusing, we have a little tutorial in the beginning, but still I couldn’t quite grasp how it worked. The lessons were pretty basic in my opinion, they covered just vocabulary, almost zero sentence structure and so on, but even the vocabulary was covered in a very random way, they picked a handful of words and threw them in a very incomplete theme.
Now to the worst part, the Japanese version was a EXACT copy! Same structure, same words, you only had a choice to put the words in romaji or kana. This made me angry, and I’m a very peaceful person.
I think this app represents what’s bad with most Japanese learning app. Japanese is NOT a romance language, not even a western language, saying that you should never EVER try to learn it as such! Japanese is a very complex language that has its own way to be learned, its own techniques, and it really makes me mad when I see apps like this because then people will go and try to learn it like that and never completely succeed. I made the same mistake four years ago when I first started to learn Japanese and it set me back YEARS I can never take back, that is why I feel so strongly about it!
From all I think it was one of the worst apps I ever tried, not just because of the Japanese and I honestly don’t recommend it at all!

Olá pessoal!Hoje trago-vos a segunda review das aplicações que andei a experimentar no passado mês! Não se preocupem, vou voltar a fazer outro tipo de posts, e não me vou focar apenas nestas pequenas reviews, apenas quero que saibam mais sobre os recursos por aí, e algo em especifico que me apercebi ao experimentar esta aplicação.
Mas antes de chegar aí quero clarificar que usei esta app para Italiano e Japonês. Até em Italiano esta aplicação é muito confusa, temos um pequeno tutorial no início mas ainda assim senti que não aprendi nada sobre como navegar pelas lições. As lições em si eram bastante básicas, apenas nos apresentavam algum vocabulário, não explicaram nada sobre estruturação das frases e aspectos gramaticais. Mas mesmo o vocabulário era apenas um punhado de palavras atiradas para dentro de um tema bastante incompleto.
Agora para o pior, a versão para Japonês era EXACTAMENTE igual! Mesma estrutura, mesmas palavras, a única diferença é que as podíamos ler em romaji ou kana. Isto deixou-me zangada, e eu considero-me uma pessoa bastante pacífica.
Acho que esta aplicação representa o que está mal com a maior parte das aplicações para aprender japonês. Japonês NÃO é uma língua latina, nem sequer do Ocidente, com isto em mente NUNCA devia ser aprendida da mesma forma! É uma lingua muito complexa com maneiras e técnicas muito especificas para ser aprendida, e deixa-me muito mas muito zangada quando aplicações como esta ignoram isso pois estão a prejudicar e a atrasar um iniciante que ainda não sabe a maneira certa de estudar! Eu era assim há quatro anos e aplicações como esta atrasaram a minha aprendizagem ANOS que nunca poderei recuperar.
De todas penso que foi das piores aplicações que alguma vez experimentei, não apenas por causa do Japonês, e honestamente não a recomendo a ninguém!

So, lately I haven’t been posting anything on my Weekly Goals segment, simply because I haven’t been studying, at all. You might even ask, ‘well Nana this is a languages blog, so what is the point of us reading of your journey if you don’t study anything?’ and yes, you do have a point, but these last month I haven’t been completely procrastinating! I’ve been testing out some language apps, many you might know about, to remake my learning schedule, and I have to say... I’m disappointed.
I’ll make individual posts about all these resources, explaining how they work and why I didn’t like them, and hey, what doesn’t work for me might work for you!
Today, as you may have guessed by the title I’m here to talk about Busuu.
This is a fairly good app/site IF you can afford it... It’s true, although you have some free content most of it is only available with a premium membership, which is a shame. I completely understand maintaining such a website might be impossible without any remuneration whatsoever, but I remember I used it a few years back and it wasn’t like this at all, it had a lot more content available, and a lot of fantastic features, all of them are now premium.
I was pretty disappointed when I saw that and it really was a deal breaker, I’m sure they make fair prices (honestly I didn’t even check them because I know I won’t be able to afford), certainly a lot cheaper than a tutor, but there are far more complete resources out there!
Still, I always recommend everyone to check them out by themselves, as I’ve said before, what works for you is different than what does for me.

Olá meus queridos!Então, sei que ultimamente não tenho postado nada no meu segmento de “Weekly Goals”, simplesmente porque não tenho andado a estudar, de todo. Podem perguntar, ‘bem Nana, este é um blog de línguas, então qual é o ponto de o lermos se não estás a estudar nenhuma língua?’ e sim, têm razão, mas não passei o ultimo mês sem fazer nada! Tenho andado a testar algumas aplicações de aprendizagem de línguas, e devo dizer… Estou desapontada.
Irei fazer um post individual sobre todos os recursos que experimentei, explicando um pouco de como funcionam e o que não gosto sobre eles, mas hey, o que não funcionou para mim pode funcionar para vocês!
Hoje, como podem ter adivinhado pelo título, venho falar-vos do Busuu.
Este é um bom site/aplicação… SE o puderem pagar! É verdade, apesar de ter algum conteúdo gratuito, a maior parte está apenas disponível na versão Premium, o que é uma pena.
Compreendo completamente que para manter um site como este seja preciso algum tipo de remuneração, mas o que me desiludiu mais foi como mudaram tanto, há uns anos usei este site e muito do conteúdo agora bloqueado era gratuito, para além disso tinha muito mais variedade de recursos disponível, todos eles agora pagos.
Fiquei mesmo extremamente desiludida quando vi isto e para mim foi o suficiente para desinstalar. Honestamente nem sei os preços para Premium porque sei que não poderia pagar a longo prazo, mas com tantos recursos gratuitos (e honestamente melhores) por aí Não investiria neste.
Ainda assim, recomendo a toda a gente a darem uma olhada há mesma, como disse, o que não funciona para mim pode funcionar para vocês!
E vai ser tudo por agora meus queridos, voltarei mais tarde com outras reviews!
